Jamie Carragher Sparks Outrage After Dismissing AFCON as 'Not a Major Tournament
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has ignited controversy after downplaying the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a non-major tournament. The remarks were made during a discussion on Mohamed Salah's Ballon d'Or prospects on Sky Sports.
Carragher suggested that Salah's Egyptian nationality and the country's international record might hinder his chances of winning the prestigious award. "I think the problem is he's with Egypt, and he's probably not playing in the major tournament as such," Carragher said.
Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards immediately countered Carragher's argument, emphasizing that AFCON is indeed a major tournament. Former England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge also weighed in, stating that winning AFCON is equivalent to winning the Euros or Copa America.
Carragher's comments have reignited debates about the global perception of African football, with many criticizing European football's tendency to downplay African competitions. The controversy comes as AFCON is set to take center stage in late 2025, ensuring the debate over its global standing will continue.
